I am a painter based in Gatehouse of Fleet in south-west Scotland, a historic town set in the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area. My work is currently divided between landscape work in the local area and narrative work based on literary and historical sources. I work primarily in acrylic, watercolour, and with chalks and pastels.

I trained at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art in the 1970s and early 80s, and then as a teacher.  I have worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for the last 30 years while continuing to paint.

The interplay between the demands of the commercial sector and my own painting is a valuable one -  the one bounces off the other.  As such I have no qualms in my painting about varying my style depending on the subject, much as one might need to do for a commercial design job.  I think this can be very beneficial and quite refreshing.

The site is set up essentially as a changing record of work.  The 365 section reflects more of a diary approach to current work and ideas, including sketches and other projects.

Work where still available is generally for sale.  Almost everything is available as a fine art print or as greetings cards however.  Contact me for further details.
